The Premier League has treated us to a brilliant day of football on Saturday. After so much heartache in the Merseyside derby over the last decade, Everton fans were hoping this one would be different. Liverpool took the lead after less than three minutes at Goodison Park when Sadio Mané smashed home an Andy Robertson cross into the box. But the Reds then lost Virgil van Dijk to injury following a robust challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. A penalty was not awarded due to the fact Van Dijk was offside when the ball came in.
The Toffees then equalised when Adrián was unable to keep out Michael Keane’s close-range header. Liverpool pressed for a second goal when it was Everton who almost went in front when Richarlison rattled the post just before the hour mark.
But with 20 minutes remaining, the away side did retake the lead when Mohamed Salah finished brilliantly following a sloppy clearance from Yerry Mina. However, 10 minutes later it was 2-2 when Dominic Calvert-Lewin leaped like a salmon to head home his 10th goal of the season.
The drama wasn’t done there because in the dying minutes, Richarlison was shown a straight red card for a studs up lunge on Thiago.
And in stoppage time, Jordan Henderson thought he’d scored the winning goal, only for it to be ruled out for a ridiculous VAR offside call against Mané. A drama-filled Merseyside Derby comes ends with 10-man Everton holding on to a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
